Planar Tracking

From what I can make out Planar tracking is a type of motion tracking that sticks to a plane rather than a series of tracking markers. This could work well for a number of reasons, such as replacing decals on trucks, posters on walls, signs etc. From a quick search I have found a few tutorials on how to achieve this in Blender.

Location location location

This week I have had to think about where I would like to make my project work, from what I have seen in some Escape showreels there are three or more locations that make up the reel. This works out well for how I aim to plan my own reel, however I hadn’t wanted to use “generic locations” in my work only… one location I had planned to use has been fenced off, although it is still viable (to get there I am no longer certain if it is public property or not.

However there is a location that would meet the “field” location. Alternatively due to time starting to become scarce I have also considered using the area around university and the Brayford as my main locations as they are easy to get to but also offers some additional flat surfaces to work with rather than have to search for more modern architecture.

With this in mind I have decided  that I will split the scenes into what I’d need to demonstrate in my reel.

The most difficult one still is the camera mapping. Though I am getting closer to having a working prototype, however I feel that I should be well into my final work now. This location should be something simple, during a BlenderGuru tutorial he mentioned that exteriors are more forgiving with camera mapping. That being said one location  that I have in mind is the small alleyway that leads to my apartment, there are very few risks.

The main hazards really are people leaving the apartments or people taking breaks from the Harvester restaurant as they use the fire door to go for breaks. Another hazard is moving produce and foodstuffs deliveries, however that is early in the morning where that might be an issue. Vehicles aren’t able to go down the alley way so it makes it a little easier but outside of the previous issues the other problem that jumps to mind is weather, and even then it’s not much of an issue.

I can camera track with a low solve error, which is good however I should be further along one location that I have considered is around the Brayford area, the first idea the jumps to mind is on the apartment side, opposite the university. However there are more risks that the previous location despite being in the same sort of area.

Firstly there are pedestrians as it also acts as a road to hotels and delivery points, presenting more risk such as strangers and vehicles but there may be some room to work with the location.

Alternatively there is also room to shoot on the opposite side of the brayford. If I use the campus I could try shooting an interior such as the atrium and try to track an object or some signage on a wall or window. This location is relatively safe however there are more people to be aware of and trip hazards such as stairs etc.

The exteriors of the uni have mostly flat faces which could allow me to use these to film and potentially track onto however I will need to think of a way to track efficiently. Jon suggested  that I could track with items in the environment however I am unsure how best to achieve this, I had thought about using coloured stickers to act as markers but then I would have to paint them out unless something was there to cover them.
